Big Little Lies is a mini-series inspired in the 2014 novel by Liane Moriarty, that tells the tale of three mothers of first graders, whose apparently perfect lives unravel to the point of murder. Said murder that was finally unveiled yesterday in the series finale and given this, I’m going to write a short review on this short series for anyone thinking of watching.
1.The scenery and cinematography
First of all this HBO mini-series is a must watch for anyone obsessed with cinematography. It is set on a beautiful town in Northern California called Monterrey that will blow your mind with the beautiful scenery and the equally beautiful and compelling cinematography. The show is very well put together when it comes to effects and composition, it’s simply beautiful to watch.
2.Beautifully developed characters
To add to it’s initial trawl, you’ll also see beauty in each of the well developed characters. You will see closely how looks and your initial assumptions on people can be incredibly wrong. The main characters are three mothers, each of them going thought difficulties in their own way, who all have children in the same school and end up forging a friendship. In the very beginning these characters seem like the same stereotypical characters you see everyday on tv, however, as the even the first episode progresses you start to see their depth, and how they’re more than what they seem. You will connect with every single character for one reason or other.
3.It deals with real issues
Domestic violence, sexual assault, divorce, hardship in parenting, and much more. Everything is talked about in such a healthy and open way that it’s hard not to empathize.
It’s impossible to say that having Nicole Kidman, Reese Whiterspoon, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, Laura Dern Adam Scott, and Alexander Skarsgard, in one tv show together is easy to brush off! Every single one of them plays their part perfectly.
With a lot of rock and folk classics mixed with modern day music, the soundtrack couldn’t be better. The songs were all carefully chosen to set the correct mood in it’s scenes. Even the children in the show enjoy classics a little more than normal, and it’s adorable.
6.The mystery (even thought it won’t be why you keep watching)
The lingering mystery in the show is “Who was killed?” and “Who killed them?”. You will have to wait until the very last episode to find that out, however it will be the characters and their lives that will keep you glued to your screen. I did not skip one scene in any of the episodes!
This mini-series is in my honest opinion a dark comedy masterpiece. I loved every single bit of it, did not skip one scene and all I’m left with is wanting more! Perhaps I’ll give the book a try – it has been sitting in my to read list for quite a while after all.
Let me know what you guys think!
